It's been an incredibly busy month here at Abandoned Ni, with fascinating buildings, hidden discoveries, heritage tours and plenty of stories to share!
I had the pleasure of delivering a talk for Craigavon Historical Society, a fantastic group of people with a shared passion for local history. I enjoyed it so much that I'm seriously considering becoming a member myself!
October also saw the launch of my guided heritage tours at the former Strand Spinning Mill, now Portview Trade Centre in Belfast. These have been going down really well, and it's been wonderful sharing the history of this remarkable building, its machinery and the people who once worked there. The next tour takes place on Saturday 7 November(Booking on my events tab)
I was also delighted to have the opportunity to document Castle House in Lisburn, a beautiful historic property with a fascinating past. I'll be sharing photographs and video footage very soon!
Hidden Tunnels, Forgotten Mills & Historic Houses
One of my more unusual discoveries this month was an underground tunnel in Newcastle, County Down! I managed to explore and document it, and you can watch the video over on my social media channels.
I also had the incredible opportunity to document one of the oldest mills I've ever visited, and what a place it was! The building is absolutely packed to the rafters with original machinery, making it a remarkable survivor of our industrial past. There's so much to explore that I'll be returning for another visit soon. I'll be sharing more photographs and stories from this extraordinary location.
Another highlight was visiting and documenting C. S. Lewis's grandparents former home in Belfast, a property with a wonderful connection to one of the world's most celebrated authors.
Talks, Ghost Stories & Community Events
There have been plenty of speaking engagements too!
I delivered a talk at Lagan Valley Island in Lisburn for the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland, followed by my Halloween event, Stories After Dark, at Boundary Brewing in Belfast.
We explored some of Ireland's strangest and most unsettling stories, and I think it's fair to say a few people went home slightly more frightened than when they arrived! Haha!
This Friday, I'll also be visiting Harbison Hall in Belfast to deliver a special heritage talk for elderly residents. These visits are always a pleasure, particularly when people begin sharing their own memories and experiences of the places we're discussing.
My next public talk will take place in Cloughey, County Down, for the local Heritage Society. Booking information is available through the society's website below 👇
Aerial Photography – Homes & Businesses
Alongside my heritage work, I've also been busy providing aerial photography for private homes and businesses.
Whether you're looking for a unique aerial photograph of your home and surrounding grounds, professional images of your business premises or a different perspective on a property, I can help.
Aerial photography offers a wonderful way to capture buildings and landscapes from above, revealing details and perspectives that simply can't be appreciated from ground level.
If you'd like to book an aerial photography session, please get in touch through the Contact Me page on my website.
Looking Ahead
It's been a month filled with everything I love about Abandoned Ni Discovering forgotten places, documenting our architectural heritage, meeting people who share my passion for history and bringing stories from the past to life.
My next walking tours in November will be in LURGAN 😎
A huge thank you to everyone who has attended a tour, invited me to speak, opened the doors of a historic building or supported my work throughout the month.
There's plenty more to come, including new photographs, historic buildings, more heritage tours and some exciting projects in the pipeline.
