The grand Edwardian-style building that many remember was designed in 1906 by M. A. Robinson, in a Neo-Baroque style with hints of Art Nouveau in the detailing. It spanned five stories and covered around 25,000 sq ft.

But after 186 years of trade, Austins suddenly closed its doors in March 2016

Today, the building lies quiet — though in 2025 it was purchased by the Inner City Trust with a £1.2 million grant to begin its revival.
