▪Forgotten halls of the Asylum ▪

In the 1800s, lunatic asylums in Ireland were plagued by unimaginable horrors. Patients endured deplorable living conditions, overcrowding, and inadequate medical care. These asylums became a place of confinement for individuals who were deemed "insane" by society, often for reasons that would be considered unjust today. 😢

Reasons for admission to these asylums varied, and many were unjust and discriminatory. Individuals could be sent to asylums for reasons such as poverty, religious differences, or simply not conforming to societal norms. This led to the unjust institutionalisation of countless innocent people, robbing them of their freedom and dignity.

Many patients from this asylum and others just like it escaped and were seen walking the local streets in the middle of the night in their nightgowns in extreme distress. One patient has been documented to not have returned, nor was there ever a body recovered.

Another documented case was of a woman who found out about her husbands numerous affairs, she confronted him and in a heated moment threw a cup of hot tea over him in frustration. He phoned the local doctor and had her committed under these grounds and deemed her as insane. I believe she may have spent the rest of her life there.

It is essential to acknowledge the suffering endured by those who were confined in these asylums. By doing so, we honor their memory and work towards a society that values mental health and treats all individuals with compassion and respect.
