This Saturday marks the first of my new tour dates inside Strand Spinning Mill at Portview Trade Centre on Belfast’s Newtownards Road.
Once one of the great industrial buildings of East Belfast, Strand Spinning Mill played an important part in the city’s linen industry. Now you’ll have the opportunity to step inside the building yourself, explore some of its surviving spaces and hear the story of the mill, the people who worked there and the industry that helped shape Belfast.
During the tour I’ll be sharing the history of Strand, looking at how the mill operated, what was produced here and the lives of the workers who once filled these enormous floors.
For me, there is something very different about hearing the history of a building while actually standing inside it. You can see the scale, the architecture and the surviving details for yourself rather than simply looking at photographs.
This Saturday is the first tour date, and I’m looking forward to welcoming the first group through the doors.
